DURABILITY OF BRIDGE DECK CONCRETE

A DETAILED DESCRIPTION IS PRESENTED OF THE DETERIORATION OF 15 BRIDGE DECKS, SOME OF WHICH HAVE BEEN PERIODICALLY EXAMINED OVER A PERIOD OF 5 YEARS. SOME OF THE BRIDGES WERE OLD ENOUGH TO SHOW SEVERE DETERIORATION ON THE FIRST INSPECTION, AND SEVERAL WERE OBSERVED DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS. AMONG THE FACTORS NOTED WERE DEPTH OF STEEL, CRACKING, HAIR CRACKING, FRACTURE PLANES, POTHOLES, SURFACE MORTAR DETERIORATION, AND PITTING OR POPOUTS. /BPR/
