UNDERWATER BUOYANT BRIDGES

THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE GENERAL DESIGN FEATURES OF THE UNDERWATER BUOYANT BRIDGE THAT WAS ONE OF THE DESIGNS PROPOSED FOR THE CROSSING OF THE STRAIT OF MESSINA, BETWEEN SOUTHERN ITALY AND SICILY. SEVERE SITE CONDITIONS SUCH AS LENGTH OF CROSSING AND DEPTH OF WATER MADE CONVENTIONAL SUSPENSION BRIDGE OR TUNNEL DESIGNS UNSUITABLE. THE BRIDGE SECTIONS WERE DESIGNED IN LENGTHS OF ABOUT 150 METERS CONTAINING THREE IDENTICAL TUBES INTENDED TO CARRY ROAD OR RAIL TRAFFIC. /TRRL/
