THE MAXIMUM DECELERATION CONCEPT IS DEFINED AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE POST DEFLECTION ANGLE IS DISCUSSED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A METHOD OF ASSESSMENT OF PROBABLE OCCUPANT INJURY AND A CURVE ILLUSTRATING UNRESTRAINED OCCUPANT INJURY ASSESSMENT IS PRESENTED. BASED ON THE RESULT OF THE INVESTIGATION, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT USE BE MADE OF 2-INCH STEEL PIPE SIGNPOSTS DRIVEN TO AN EMBEDMENT DEPTH OF 3.5 FT IN SOIL.
