PRESTRESSED COMPOSITE GIRDER FOR SHORT SPAN BRIDGES

THE PRESTRESSED AND NON-PRESTRESSED COMPOSITE DESIGNS FOR SIMPLY-SUPPORTED LONGITUDINAL STRINGERS FOR SHORT SPAN DECK BRIDGES HAVE BEEN STUDIED. A COMPARISON SHOWS THAT PRESTRESSING RESULTS IN A REDUCTION IN THE STEEL WEIGHT OF 29.6, 22.3 AND 28.7 PERCENT FOR 40-FT., 60-FT. AND 80-FT. SPANS RESPECTIVELY, WHEREAS THE CORRESPONDING REDUCTIONS IN THE COST OF STEEL ARE 21.8, 13.8 AND 23.8 PERCENT. IN ADDITION TO THESE SAVINGS IN THE MATERIAL COST, LIGHTER STRINGERS WILL LEAD TO A REDUCTION IN SHIPPING, ERECTION, AND MAINTENANCE EXPENDITURES.
