FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE VOIDED BRIDGE DECKS

A TWO-DIMENSIONAL FINITE ELEMENT APPROACH IS ADOPTED TO ANALYZE POST-TENSIONED VOIDED CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS. THE ANALYSIS MAKES USE OF THE CLOUGH-FELIPPA QUADRILATERAL BENDING ELEMENT AND A FIVE NODED ISOPARAMETRIC PLANE STRESS QUADRILATERAL ELEMENT. THE EFFECTS OF LARGE VOIDS IN THE CROSS SECTION OF THE BRIDGE ARE SIMULATED BY USING EQUIVALENT ORTHOTROPIC MATERIAL RIGIDITIES. EFFECTS OF NEUTRAL AXIS LOCATION ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. A COMPARISON OF NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE TWO- DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS IS SUFFICENTLY ACCURATE FOR DESIGN PURPOSES EXCEPT IN END ANCHORAGE ZONES WHERE COMPLEX THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRESS STATES EXIST. /AUTHOR/
