AESTHETICS IN STRUCTURES

AESTHETICS IS A PRIME DESIGN REQUIREMENT EQUAL IN RANK WITH LOAD CAPACITY AND SAFE GEOMETRICS. FEATURES TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE DESIGN OF SMALL BRIDGES ARE REVIEWED. THE EXTRA COST OF USING SPECIAL SHAPES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF PIERS AND BENTS CAN BE MINIMIZED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF FORM SHAPES THAT CAN BE EASILY ADAPTED TO VARIOUS HEIGHTS AND WIDTHS. WALL PIERS MUST BE OF THE RIGHT SIZE. IF THE HEIGHT OF THE STRUCTURE VARIES, A GOLF-TEE PIER THAT CAN BE RAISED OR LOWERED MAY BE USED. SHADOW, TEXTURE OR COLOR CAN BE USED TO BREAK UP THE LARGE FLAT FACES, IF THE COLUMNS GET WIDER AND TALLER. THE SECTION OF THE PUBLIC MOST EXPOSED TO THE VIEW OF BRIDGE STUCTURE MAY BE THE COMMUNITY LIVING IN ITS VICINITY AND NOT THE PASSING MOTORIST. CONSIDERATION MUST BE GIVEN TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF THEIR VISUAL ENVIRONMENT. SPECIAL DESIGNS THAT INSURE SUPPORTS AND SUPERSTRUCTURES ARE A PLEASANT COMBINATION ARE OUTLINED. THE OVERALL CONFIGURATION OF A BRIDGE MUST BE COMPATIBLE WITH ITS SURROUNDINGS. THE UNATTRACTIVE, UTILITARIAN APPEARANCE OF SQUARE-COVERED, RECTANGULAR BOX GIRDERS CAN BE DECREASED BY SLOPING OF THE SIDES FOLLOWED BY THE USE OF LARGE-RADIUS FILLETS ON THE CORNERS. THE RAILINGS OFFER THE DESIGNER AN OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIVIDUAL DESIGN SUCH AS BREAKING UP THE SMOOTH FACE WITH SOME INTERESTING FORM, TEXTURE OR COLOR. PEDESTRIAN STRUCTURES POSE A SPECIAL PROBLEM. SIMPLE, SPIRAL RAMPS WHICH CAN ACCOMODATE SHOPPING CARTS, BABY STROLLERS AND BICYCLES CAN BE MADE TO LOOK LIGHT AND ATTRACTIVE. ABSTRACT DESIGNS ON CONCRETE WALLS, AND EXPERIENCES IN PLANTING ALONG THE SLOPES ARE DESCRIBED.
