BOLT TENSION WITH A DIRECT TENSION INDICATOR

THE CORONET LOAD INDICATOR, A DEVICE FOR EVALUATING THE INDUCED BOLT TENSION DURING AND AFTER TIGHTENING, IS A WASHER WITH A SERIES OF PROTRUSIONS ON ONE SIDE. IT IS USUALLY INSERTED BETWEEN THE BOLT HEAD AND THE GRIPPED MATERIAL --- LEAVING A GAP. MEASUREMENTS ARE MADE OF THE GAP AFTER TIGHTENING. A TEST PROGRAM, INCLUDING THE PREPARATION AND TEST PROCEDURE, IS OUTLINED IN ORDER THAT THE BEHAVIOR AND PERFORMANCE OF CORONET LOAD INDICATORS CAN BE DETERMINED WHEN USED WITH A325 AND A490 BOLTS. THE RESULTS ARE ANALYZED ACCORDING TO PARALLEL SURFACES, OUT-OF-PARALLEL SURFACES, GRIP LENGTH INFLUENCE, AND BOLTS INSTALLED IN SIMULATED JOINTS.
