PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS WITH A LONGITUDINAL CAVITY

A PRETENSIONED, PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAM OF RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTION WITH A CIRCULAR VOID, DESIGNED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GUIDELINES SPECIFIED IN ACI 318-71, IS DESCRIBED FROM THE STANDPOINT OF THE ELASTIC BEAM THEORY OF BENDING. A PROTOTYPE BEAM WAS TESTED TO VERIFY THE ADEQUACY OF THE DESIGN METHOD AND TO DETERMINE APPROPRIATE APPLICATIONS FOR SUCH BEAMS. THE MATERIALS USED AND THE EXPERIMENTAL METHODS EMPLOYED ARE DESCRIBED. IT WAS FOUND THAT SUCH BEAMS CAN BE USED FOR VARIOUS STRUCTURAL PURPOSES, E.G., TO CROSS STREAMS CARRYING WATER, SEWAGE, TELEPHONE LINES, AND ELECTRICAL CABLES, ABOVE OR BENEATH THE STREAM. THEIR USE HAS OCCASIONED APPRECIABLE SAVINGS IN BOTH CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE COSTS. THE STRESSES PREDICTED BY THE ELASTIC BEAM EQUATIONS AGREE SATISFACTORILY WITH EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. A RIGOROUS ELASTICITY SOLUTION IS, THUS, OF LITTLE VALUE, SO LONG AS THE SPAN-TO-DEPTH RATIO OF THE BEAM IS FAIRLY LARGE. THE ULTIMATE CAPACITY FOR THE BEAM MAY BE PREDICTED BY THE GUIDELINES GIVEN IN ACI 318-71 WITH A SATISFACTORY SAFETY MARGIN.
