ENERGY STUDY OF UNDERGROUND RAPID TRANSIT

UNDERGROUND RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEMS CAN GENERATE ENOUGH HEAT FROM THEIR OPERATIONS TO RAISE TUNNEL AND STATION TEMPERATURES AS MUCH AS 15 OR 20 DEG. F. ABOVE OUTDOOR TEMPERATURES. A PRELIMINARY ANALYTICAL MODEL FOR EVALUATING THESE ENERGY TRANSFERS WAS DEVELOPED. RESULTS OBTAINED FOR THE SIMPLIFIED THERMAL MODEL OF AN UNDERGROUND RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM PERMIT DRAWING THREE MAJOR CONCLUSIONS: THE PROPER DESIGN OF THE VENTILATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WILL REQUIRE A DETAILED ENERGY BUDGET STUDY; THERMAL MODELING OF THE UNDERGROUND SYSTEM MUST BE TRUE TO THE PHYSICAL CONDITIONS IMPOSED; AND TUNNEL AIR TEMPERATURE IS A COMPLEX FUNCTION OF ALL THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ENERGY RELEASE AND ENERGY TRANSFER MECHANISMS IN THE TUNNEL. /AUTHOR/
