NATURAL PERIODS OF INFILLED FRAMES

THIS PAPER DEALS WITH THE CALCULATION OF THE NORMAL MODES OF VIBRATION IN REINFORCED CONCRETE FRAMES WITH CONCRETE BLOCK INFILL USING FINITE ELEMENT THEORY. THE EXISTENCE OF NORMAL MODES WAS VERIFIED EXPERIMENTALLY. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CALCULATED VALUES OF NATURAL PERIODS AND THE EXPERIMENTAL ONES RANGE BETWEEN 40% AND 15%. THIS DIFFERENCE IS NOT EXCESSIVE IF THE COMPLEXITY OF THE MATERIALS AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EXPERIMENTAL VALUES OF SIMILAR MODELS ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. IT WAS ASSUMED THAT THE WALLS BEHAVED LINEARLY. THE PROPOSED METHOD OF DETERMINATION OF DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS CAN BE USED IN ANY COMPOSITE STRUCTURE PROVIDED THE SIMPLIFYING ASSUMPTIONS OF HOMOGENEITY, ISOTROPY AND ELASTICITY MAY BE APPLIED. IT REQUIRES A LIMITED TESTING EQUIPMENT FOR THE EVALUATION OF STATIC MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE COMPONENT MATERIALS. /AUTHOR/
