CRACK CONTROL IN BEAMS REINFORCED WITH BUNDLED BARS USING AC1318-71

THE ACI BUILDING CODE AND COMMENTARY TO SECTION 10.6 ON CRACK CONTROL DOES NOT GIVE RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE APPLICATIONS OF THESE PROVISIONS IN CASES OF BEAMS REINFORCED WITH BUNDLED BARS. THE BOND STRESS LEVEL WHICH IS A FUNCTION OF THE CONTACT AREA BETWEEN THE BARS AND THE SURROUNDING CONCRETE IS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT PARAMETERS DETERMINING THE CRACK SPACING AND HENCE THE CRACK WIDTH. HENCE, UTILIZATION OF THIS HYPOTHESIS PERMITS THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMPIRICAL REDUCTION COEFFICIENTS TO ACCOUNT FOR THE REDUCTION OF THE BONDED AREA DUE TO BUNDLING. THIS PAPER PRESENTS SUCH REDUCTION COEFFICIENTS FOR USE BY THE DESIGN ENGINEER IN EXERCISING CRACK CONTROL WHEN USING BUNDLED BARS AS REINFORCEMENT.
