STUDY OF AN EXPERIMENTAL CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENT, INTERSTATE NO 59, JONES COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI

THE JONES COUNTY PROJECT, BUILT IN THE WINTER AND EARLY SPRING OF 1962, CONSISTS OF 6.77 MILES OF 4-LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAY. THE PAVEMENT OF THE NORTHBOUND ROADWAY IS REINFORCED WITH SMOOTH WELDED WIRE FABRIC AND THE PAVEMENT OF THE SOUTHBOUND ROADWAY CONTAINS DEFORMED STEEL BARS. ALL OF THE EXPERIMENTAL PAVEMENT IS 8 INCHES THICK AND THE REINFORCING STEEL IS AT MID-DEPTH OF THE SLAB. ONE MILE OF 9-INCH CONVENTIONALLY REINFORCED PAVEMENT ADJACENT TO THE NORTH END OF THE EXPERIMENTAL PAVEMENT IS INCLUDED IN THE STUDY, FOR PURPOSES OF COMPARISON. MAJOR EXPERIMENTAL FEATURES ARE /1/ TYPE OF REINFORCEMENT--SMOOTH WELDED WIRE FABRIC AND DEFORMED BARS, /2/ PERCENTAGE OF LONGITUDINAL STEEL--0.5, 0.6 AND 0.7 FOR EACH TYPE OF REINFORCEMENT AND /3/ CAST-IN-PLACE, FULL-WIDTH CONCRETE ANCHOR LUGS TO RESTRAIN LONGITUDINAL MOVEMENT OF THE ENDS OF THE CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED PAVEMENT. AT THE END OF THREE YEARS OF PAVEMENT LIFE, NOTABLE OBSERVATIONS AND BEHAVIOR TRENDS ARE AS FOLLOWS' /1/ TWELVE ABNORMALLY WIDE TRANSVERSE CRACKS OCCURRED IN THE CONCRETE AT THE 13-INCH LAPS OF THE SMOOTH WELDED WIRE FABRIC. RECENTLY, DEFORMED WIRE FABRIC HAS REPLACED SMOOTH WIRE FABRIC AS REINFORCING STEEL FOR CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED PAVEMENTS, /2/ EXCEPT AS NOTED ABOVE, BOTH THE CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED AND THE CONVENTIONAL PAVEMENT HAVE GIVEN VERY SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE, WITH NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE THREE PERCENTAGES OF LONGITUDINAL STEEL IN THE CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED PAVEMENT, AND /3/ MAXIMUM OUTWARD MOVEMENT OF THE FOUR ANCHORED ENDS OF THE CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED PAVEMENT RANGED FROM 0.5 TO 1.25 INCHES, WITH A DEFINITE INDICATION OF A PROGRESSIVE INCREASE WITH TIME.
