COMPUTER SIMULATION OF A STOCHASTIC DISPATCHING SYSTEM WITH ON-LINE REAL-TIME FEED BACK

A COMPUTERIZED SIMULATION MODEL WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF A STOCHASTIC DISPATCHING SYSTEM. THE DISPATCHING OPERATIONS FOR A READY-MIXED CONCRETE COMPANY WERE STUDIED IN DETAIL. THE SIMULATION MODEL IS DESIGNED TO SIMULATE THE DISPATCHING FUNCTION RELATED TO THE OPERATION OF THE CONCRETE TRUCKS. A FULLY INTERACTIVE SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED AND DESIGNED TO PROVIDE FULL ON-LINE COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE PLANT DISPATCHER AND THE COMPUTER. A PORTABLE REMOTE COMPUTER TERMINAL WAS USED TO ESTABLISH CONTACT WITH A LARGE TIME-SHARING COMPUTER LOCATED SEVERAL MILES AWAY. IN ALL THE SIMULATION MODEL EXPERIMENTS A FIXED TRUCK FLEET WAS USED FOR THE DURATION OF AN ENTIRE EXPERIMENT. THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL AND ON-LINE COMMUNICATION INSTRUCTIONS PRESENTED PROVIDED MEANS FOR SCHEDULING MANAGERS TO UTILIZE HIGH-SPEED ELECTRONIC COMPUTERS IN MAKING THE TRUCK SCHEDULING DECISIONS.
