A REPORT ON THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER

THE REPORT COVERS ARKANSAS EXPERIENCE IN MAKING THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER FIELD OPERATIONAL. THIS COVERAGE INCLUDES /1/ AN EXPLANATION OF THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE PROFILOMETER, /2/ DESCRIPTION OF THE PROFILOMETER, AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT AND TOWING VEHICLE, /3/ DISCUSSION OF CALIBRATIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS PRIOR TO FIELD OPERATIONS AND /4/ DESCRIPTION OF FIELD PROCEDURES. IN ADDITION, THE CALIBRATION AND OPERATION OF THE TEXAS TEXTUREMETER ARE DESCRIBED AND PROCEDURES FOR THE DETERMINATION OF SERVICEABILITY INDEXES ARE DETAILED. THE STATE NOW USES A STATION WAGON AS THE TOWING VEHICLE FOR THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER, BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDS THE USE OF A LARGER VEHICLE SUCH AS A WALK-IN TYPE DELIVERY VAN. THE TOWING VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A TRAILER HITCH BAR WITH HITCHES IN THE CENTER AND DIRECTLY BEHIND EACH WHEEL. THE CENTER HITCH IS USED IN TRANSPORTING THE PROFILOMETER TO THE SITES AND THE TWO SIDE HITCHES PERMIT THE TAKING OF SLOPE VARIANCE MEASUREMENTS IN EITHER WHEEL PATH WITHOUT ABNORMAL TRACKING OF THE TOWING VEHICLE. A TRAILER, DESIGNED TO CARRY THE FRONT PORTION OF THE PROFILOMETER ON TOP OF ITS REAR PORTION, IS USED FOR TRANSPORT PURPOSES TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO CERTAIN COMPONENTS OF THE UNIT DURING RELATIVELY HIGH-SPEED TRAVEL TO THE TEST SITES. APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES IS REQUIRED TO UNLOAD, ASSEMBLE AND CONNECT THE PROFILOMETER TO THE TOWING VEHICLE. PRIOR TO TESTING, THE TWO PROFILOMETER TIRES ARE INFLATED TO 40 PSI PRESSURE. THE SLOPE WHEELS ARE ADJUSTED TO EXERT APPROXIMATELY 130 POUNDS ON THE PAVEMENT WHEN THE LIFT MOTOR IS IN THE DOWN POSITION, AND THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE SLOPE WHEELS AND THE SWITCHPLATE IS SET AT 19 INCHES. THE PROFILOMETER IS TOWED AT APPROXIMATELY THREE MILES PER HOUR DURING TESTING OF ROUGH-TEXTURED PAVEMENT SURFACES. CONSIDERABLE EFFORT WAS EXPENDED IN MAKING THE PROFILOMETER FIELD OPERATIONAL. ALL TROUBLE WAS RESOLVED, BUT EXPERIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT FREQUENT EQUIPMENT CHECKS ARE ESSENTIAL TO CONTINUED SATISFACTORY PERFORMENCE. THESE CHECKS ARE DESCRIBED IN THE REPORT. /BPR/
