THE CURRENT STATE OF THE ART OF COMPACTION PROCEDURES

COMMONLY ACCEPTED PRACTICE IN COMPACTING HOT-MIX ASPHALTIC CONCRETE IS BASED ON: (1) CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPACTION EQUIPMENT, AND (2) DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURES, INCLUDING NUMBER OF REPETITIONS OF LOAD, TEMPERATURE OF MIX AT VARIOUS TIMES, AND TIME REQUIRED TO APPLY ROLLING. TEMPERATURE IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE ONE REPETITION AT A HIGH TEMPERATURE IS THE EQUIVALENT OF SEVERAL REPETITIONS AT A LOWER TEMPERATURE. SINCE THE MIX IS COOLING ALL THE TIME, RESULTING IN A DROP IN TEMPERATURE, TIME IS CONSIDERED MEANINGFUL. ROLLERS ARE GENERALLY USED IN THE COMPACTION OF HOT-MIX ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. ROLLING CONSISTS OF INITIAL OR BREAKDOWN ROLLING, INTERMEDIATE ROLLING, AND FINAL ROLLING. A FAIR NUMBER OF AGENCIES DO NOT REQUIRE INTERMEDIATE ROLLING. BREAKDOWN ROLLING IS GENERALLY ACCOMPLISHED WITH 8-10 TON 2-AXLE TANDEM AND 10-12 TON 3-WHEEL STEEL ROLLERS. SOME AGENCIES PERMIT RUBBER TIRED ROLLERS FOR BREAKDOWN, SPECIFYING TIRES INFLATED TO 60 PSI OR MORE. BREAKDOWN ROLLING AVERAGES ABOUT THREE PASSES AND IS APPLIED AT MIX TEMPERATURES AS HOT AS POSSIBLE. INDICATED AVERAGE TIME FOR APPLYING BREAKDOWN ROLLING IS 9 MINUTES. INTERMEDIATE ROLLING IS ACCOMPLISHED MOST OFTEN WITH RUBBER TIRED ROLLERS INFLATED TO 60 PSI OR MORE, USING 4 PASSES AND AVERAGE ROLLING TIME IS 15 MINUTES. FINAL ROLLING IS ACCOMPLISHED WITH TANDEM ROLLERS, USING 4 PASSES, TAKING AN AVERAGE OF 17 MINUTES.
