STEPS IN THE ECONOMIC CONTROL OF QUALITY

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF ASPECTS OF PRODUCT QUALITY CONTROL LEADING TO ECONOMIC CONTROL OF QUALITY. CHANGES AND CONCEPTS IN INSPECTION, FIELD PERFORMANCE, CONSUMER WANTS, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, DESIGN AND SPECIFICATION, AND MAKING THE PRODUCT ARE ANALYZED. THESE FORM THE CHECKLIST FOR QUALITY CONTROL ACTIVITY. THE PROCEDURE RECOMMENDED TO ASSURE THAT THE PROCESS OF MANUFACTURE IS SATISFACTORY IS TO: (1) DETERMINE THE QUALITY THAT IS WANTED THROUGH CONSUMER RESEARCH, (2) PERFORM RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WORK TO DEVISE MEANS FOR FULFILLING THESE WANTS AT A REASONABLE COST, (3) DESIGN AND SPECIFY THE PRODUCT SELECTED AND IN SO DOING SET TOLERABLE LIMITS, (4) MAKE THE PRODUCT THAT IS SPECIFIED, (5) INSPECT THE PRODUCT FOR CONFORMANCE TO DESIGN AND SPECIFICATION, AND (6) TEST THE PRODUCT IN SERVICE TO SEE THAT IT SATISFIES THE WANTS OF THE USER IN AN ADEQUATE, DEPENDABLE AND ECONOMIC WAY. THE CHECK-LIST ENDEAVORS TO MEASURE THE PENETRATION OF QUALITY CONTROL THINKING FOR THE ENTIRE OPERATION OF MAKING A PRODUCT.
