THE TRANSLATION OF THE RESULTS OF THE AASHO ROAD TEST TO USEFUL GUIDES FOR DESIGN IN NORTH CAROLINA

A SATELLITE PROJECT WAS CONDUCTED TO DEVELOP PRESENT SERVICEABILITY INDEX EQUATIONS FOR FLEXIBLE AND RIGID PAVEMENTS IN NORTH CAROLINA AND TO STUDY STRUCTURAL COEFFICIENTS FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. THE PRESENT SERVICEABILITY INDEX EQUATIONS WERE DETERMINED BY USING STATISTICAL PROCEDURES FOR EVALUATING THE RESULTS OF PRESENT SERVICEABILITY RATIOS. THE EVALUATION OF THE STRUCTURAL COEFFICIENTS FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS INITIALLY CONSISTED OF A STUDY OF EXISTING PAVEMENTS IN NORTH CAROLINA. A PILOT TEST SECTION WAS CONSTRUCTED DURING THE LATTER STAGES OF THE PROJECT TO EVALUATE THE FEASIBILITY OF UNDERDESIGNING TEST SECTIONS FOR STUDY. THE VARIATION IN MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND THICKNESSES OF COMPONENTS UNDER CLOSELY INSPECTED CONDITIONS WERE THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE DEGREE OF UNIFORMITY THAT COULD BE EXPECTED IN FUTURE TEST SECTIONS. /AUTHOR/
