BELT CONVEYORS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION. A SUMMARY OF A FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE USE OF BELT CONVEYORS FOR EARTHMOVING IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

A FEASIBILITY STUDY WAS MADE TO ASSESS THE ECONOMICS AND PRACTICABILITY OF EARTHMOVING METHODS INVOLVING VERTICAL-FACE EXCAVATION COMBINED WITH TRANSPORTATION OF MATERIAL BY BELT CONVEYOR. THEIR VALUE HAS BEEN ESTIMATED IN COMPARISON WITH CONVENTIONAL EARTHMOVING METHODS USING SCRAPERS, FACE SHOVELS AND DUMP TRUCKS. COMBINATIONS OF CONVENTIONAL EARTHMOVING METHODS AND BELT-CONVEYOR SYSTEMS HAVE ALSO BEEN STUDIED. THE STUDY WAS BASED ON EARTHWORK VOLUMES AND CONSTRUCTION PERIODS TAKEN FROM THREE MOTORWAY CONTRACTS. THE FOLLOWING MAIN CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN: (1) THE COSTS OF EARTHMOVING USING CONVENTIONAL METHODS RISE RAPIDLY WITH INCREASING HAUL DISTANCE. (2) THE COSTS OF EARTHMOVING BY BELT-CONVEYOR SYSTEMS WOULD BE LESS AFFECTED BY HAUL DISTANCE THAN EARTHMOVING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS. (3) THE COSTS OF EARTHMOVING BY A BELT-CONVEYOR SYSTEM ALONE SHOULD BE LOWER THAN WITH CONVENTIONAL EARTHMOVING METHODS ON SITES WITH ESPECIALLY LONG HAUL DISTANCES AND WHERE A HIGH PROPORTION OF WINTER WORKING IS INVOLVED. (4) ON SITES WITH MORE NORMAL HAUL DISTANCES A REDUCTION IN EARTHWORK COSTS IS STILL LIKELY TO BE ACHIEVED WITH CONVENTIONAL PLANT IS USED FOR EARTHMOVING OVER THE EARTHWORKS. FOR THE THREE SITES STUDIED THE SAVING WOULD VARY BETWEEN 5 AND 23 PERCENT PROVIDED THAT THE EQUIPMENT WAS UNPRODUCTIVE BETWEEN CONTRACTS FOR SHORT PERIODS ONLY. THESE CONCLUSIONS WARRANT FULL-SCALE TRIALS OF THE USE OF BELT CONVEYORS FOR EARTHMOVING ON SUITABLE SITES. /RRL(A)/
