A STUDY OF THE FEASIBILITY OF USING BELT CONVEYORS FOR EARTHMOVING IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

A FEASIBILITY STUDY WAS MADE TO ASSESS THE ECONOMICS AND PRACTICABILITY OF EARTHMOVING METHODS INVOLVING VERTICAL-FACE EXCAVATION COMBINED WITH TRANSPORTATION OF MATERIAL BY BELT CONVEYOR. A COMPARISON WAS MADE WITH CONVENTIONAL EARTHMOVING METHODS USING SCRAPERS, FACE SHOVELS AND DUMP TRUCKS. COMBINATIONS OF CONVENTIONAL EARTHMOVING METHODS AND BELT-CONVEYOR SYSTEMS HAVE ALSO BEEN STUDIED. THE STUDY WAS BASED ON EARTHWORK VOLUMES AND CONSTRUCTION PERIODS TAKEN FROM 3 MOTORWAY CONTRACTS. THE FOLLOWING MAIN CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN: (1) THE COSTS OF EARTHMOVING USING CONVENTIONAL METHODS RISE RAPIDLY WITH INCREASING HAUL DISTANCE. (2) THE COSTS OF EARTHMOVING BY BELT-CONVEYOR SYSTEMS WOULD BE LESS AFFECTED BY HAUL DISTANCE THAN EARTHMOVING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS. (3) IN GENERAL, THE COSTS OF EARTHMOVING BY A BELT-CONVEYOR SYSTEM ALONE WOULD BE HIGHER THAN FOR CONVENTIOANL EARTHMOVING METHODS. (4) WHEN CONVENTIONAL PLANT IS USED FOR EARTHMOVING OVER THE SHORTER HAUL DISTANCES AND A BELT-CONVEYOR SYSTEM FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE EARTHWORKS, A REDUCTION IN EARTHWORK COSTS MAY BE ACHIEVED COMPARED WITH CONVENTIONAL-PLANT OPERATIONS ALONE. FOR THE THREE SITES STUDIED THE SAVING WOULD VARY BETWEEN 5 AND 23 PERCENT PROVIDED THAT THE EQUIPMENT WAS UNPRODUCTIVE BETWEEN CONTRACTS FOR SHORT PERIODS ONLY. /RRL(A)/
