INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE AND OTHER CLIMATIC FACTORS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SOIL-PAVEMENT SYSTEMS

AS A PRECONDITION FOR A MEANINGFUL ENGINEERING ASSESSMENT OF THE INFLUENCE OF NORMAL CLIMATIC TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SOIL-PAVEMENT SYSTEMS, IT IS NECESSARY TO ASSEMBLE AND COORDINATE DATA OBTAINED ON SUCH SYSTEMS UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS. THE PLANNERS OF THE AASHO ROAD TEST INCLUDED IN THEIR PROGRAM A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF CLIMATIC AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS SUCH AS LOCATION OF THE GROUND WATER TABLE, DEPTH OF FROST PENETRATION, AND TEMPERATURE OF THE AIR, PAVEMENT, AND GROUND. THIS PERMITTED A STUDY OF THE INTERRELATION OF THESE FACTORS WITH TYPE, THICKNESS, AND LOAD BEARING CHARACTERISTICS OF PAVEMENT AND BASE STRUCTURES. TYPICAL CLIMATIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA OBTAINED DURING THE AASHO ROAD TEST ARE SUMMARIZED, INCLUDING: (1) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENTS, METHODS OF INSTALLATION, AND MEASURING TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED AT THE AASHO ROAD TEST, (2) DISCUSSION OF THE EFFECT OF THE VARIOUS COVER CONDITIONS ON THE SEASONAL FLUCTUATION OF THE GROUND WATER LEVEL, ON THE DEPTH OF FROST PENETRATION AND ON THE TEMPERATURE IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE SOIL-PAVEMENT SYSTEM, (3) CORRELATION OF TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS WITH SOIL-PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE AS REFLECTED IN SURFACE STRAINS AND DEFLECTIONS, AND (4) PRESENTATION OF DATA ON SEASONAL FLUCTUATION OF STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF PAVEMENT COMPONENTS AND OF SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS. THE GENERAL LACK OF FIELD DATA MAY BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE HIGH COST OF, AND THE HARDSHIP IN OBTAINING THEM. THE AUTHOR BELIEVES THAT PATIENT COLLECTION OF WELL DOCUMENTED FIELD DATA IS ONE OF THE PREREQUISITES NECESSARY TO A MORE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SOIL- PAVEMENT ASSEMBLY AS AN OPEN THERMODYNAMIC SYSTEM WHOSE BEHAVIOR IS GOVERNED BY THE LAWS OF THERMO-DYNAMICS AND OF ENERGY AND MASS TRANSPORT. /AUTHOR/
