APPROPRIATE USE OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN UNUSUAL VIADUCT

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE HARMSEN VIADUCT DESIGN ACROSS THE EUROPORT ROAD IN ROTTERDAM WHICH IS PART OF A GROUP OF STRUCTURES CONSISTING OF THE MOBILE STEEL HARMSEN BRIDGE AND THE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE ACROSS THE BRIELSE MEER. EFFORTS WERE MADE TO BLEND THE STYLE OF THE THREE STRUCTURES. IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE WEIGHT TO A MINIMUM, LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE WAS USED FOR A SECTION 2680 M LONG. /LCPC(A)/RRL/
