CONTROL OF ADMIXTURES AND ENTRAINED AIR DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF RIGID PAVEMENTS /IN GERMAN/

FOLLOWING SALT AND FROST DAMAGES TO PAVEMENTS, A TEST PROGRAM WAS STARTED IN SWITZERLAND IN 1968. A STUDY WAS MADE OF THE (1) INFLUENCE OF THE FOLLOWING FACTORS ON THE ENTRAINED AIR CONTENT OF FRESH CONCRETE AND RESISTANCE OF HARDENED CONCRETE TO FROST AND DE-ICING SALTS: AIR-ENTRAINING AGENTS (SILSA AND BARRA) AND THEIR PROPORTIONING, WATER/CEMENT RATIO, PROPORTION OF FINES IN AGGREGATES, TYPES OF CEMENT (FINE OR COARSE GRINDING), AND MIXING TIME; (2) ESTABLISHMENT AND INTERPRETATION OF SUITABLE CRITERIA OF THIN HARDENED CONCRETE SLIDES WITH A VIEW TO EVALUATING THE POSSIBLE RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE TO FROST AND DE-ICING SALTS; (3) INVESTIGATION ON THIN SLIDES OF THE PENETRATION OF SURFACE TREATMENT PRODUCTS USED FOR PROTECTING THE SURFACING AGAINST FROST AND DE-ICING SALT DAMAGES; (4) ESTABLISHMENT OF REGULATIONS FOR CONTROLLING AIR-ENTRAINING AGENTS, FOR CURRENT CONDITIONS IN SWITZERLAND; AND (5) INFLUENCE OF THE QUALITY OF DE-ICING SALT USED (G/M2 AND PER SPREADING SESSION) ON THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE. INVESTIGATIONS 3, 4 AND 5 ARE NOT COMPLETED YET. TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN THE LABORATORY AND COMPARED WITH IN-SITU OBSERVATIONS ON MOTORWAYS. /LCPC(A)/RRL/
