OVERLAY DESIGN

A METHOD OF MEASURING SURFACE DEFLECTIONS OF A DISTRESSED ROAD WITH A BENKELMAN BEAM, AND THE DESIGN PROCEDURES USED TO REDUCE THESE DEFLECTIONS WITHIN CERTAIN LIMITS USING A BITUMINOUS OVERLAY ARE DESCRIBED. THE DESIGN PROPOSED FOR THE DISTRESSED ROAD IS CHECKED BY TWO METHODS USED FOR THE DESIGN OF NEW ROADS. THE SPECIFICATION OF BITUMINOUS OVERLAYS CURRENTLY USED BY THE NATAL ROADS DEPARTMENT IS DISCUSSED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT BITUMINOUS OVERLAYS WILL BE INCREASINGLY USED TO PROLONG THE LIVES OF OLD ROADS AND FOLLOW UP MEASUREMENTS ON COMPLETED WORKS ARE NECESSARY TO HELP ARRIVE AT IMPROVED DESIGN PROCEDURES FOR SOUTH AFRICAN CONDITIONS. /RRL(A)/
