A FRESH OUTLOOK ON THE DESIGN OF SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENTS

THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE QUANTITY OF BINDER THAT SHOULD BE APPLIED AND THE SPREAD RATIO OF AGGREGATE IN SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENTS ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO EXISTING ROAD SURFACE CONDITIONS WHICH REQUIRE TREATMENT OR RETREATMENT. DATA ARE PRESENTED SHOWING THAT IN A ROAD WITH A SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENT, EMBEDMENT OF CHIPPINGS INTO THE UNDERLYING SURFACE TAKES PLACE. A NEW TEST, WHICH CAN BE USED TO QUANTIFY THE DEGREE OF EMBEDMENT EXPECTED UNDER VARIOUS CLIMATIC CONDITINS, IS INTRODUCED TO SINGLE SURFACE-TREATMENT DESIGN. A RATIONAL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS PRESENTED WHICH TAKES INTO ACCOUNT ALL THE RECOGNISED FACTORS AFFECTING THE PERFORMANCE OF SINGLE SURFACE TREATMENTS. AN EXAMPLE ILLUSTRATING THE USE OF SUCH A DESIGN METHOD IS GIVEN, AS WELL AS ITS APPLICATION TO ACTUAL ROAD EXPERIMENTS. PERFORMANCE DATA FROM THE EXPERIMENTS SUBSTANTIATE THAT THE DATA PRESENTED ARE REASONABLY RELIABLE FOR A VARIETY OF ROAD CONDITIONS. /RRL(A)/
