A BASIS FOR RATIONAL PAVEMENT DESIGN

ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF DESIGN FOR NEW PAVEMENTS AND PAVEMENT STRENGHENING ARE REVIEWED, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE USE OF "DEFLECTION" TESTING AS AN ADJUNCT TO CONVENTIONAL METHODS AND AS A CONSTRUCTION CONTROL TOOL. METHODS DESCRIBED FOR NEW PAVEMENTS ARE: (1) CONVENTIONAL CBR DESIGN, (2) DEFLECTION DESIGN USING PROTOTYPE PAVEMENT, (3) DIRECT DEFLECTION DESIGN, AND (4) CBR WITH BENKELMAN DEFLECTION USED FOR INTERPOLATION.
