MEASUREMENT OF DYNAMIC STRESS AND STRAIN IN AND UNDER ROAD CONSTRUCTIONS

MEASUREMENTS ARE MADE OF DYNAMIC STRESSES AND STRAINS IN VARIOUS LAYERS OF THE ROAD UNDER MOVING VEHICLES TO OBTAIN DATA FOR RATIONAL PAVEMENT DESIGN. THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE, LOADING, AND TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION ON THESE PARAMETERS IS DISCUSSED. GAUGES RECENTLY DEVELOPED AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY ARE DESCRIBED, WHICH UTILIZE PEZIO-ELECTRIC CRYSTALS TO MEASURE SOIL STRESS AND DIFFERENTIAL TRANSFORMERS TO MEASURE SOIL STRAIN. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A FOIL STRAIN GAUGE TRANSDUCER FOR MEASURING HORIZONTAL TENSILE STRAIN WITHIN THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION. THE USE OF THESE GAUGES TO DETERMINE THE LOAD SPREADING PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS TYPES OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION IS DESCRIBED AND RESULTS ARE GIVEN. /RRL/A/
