PERFORMANCE OF TWO CONTINUOUS MIXERS FOR CEMENT-STABILIZED GRAVEL, USING VOLUME-PROPORTIONING OF MATERIALS

TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE (1) THE EFFICIENCY OF BARBER-GREENE MIXING PLANTS INCORPORATING THE MODEL 824 CONTINUOUS MIXER UNIT FOR CEMENT STABILIZED GRAVELS, AND (2) THE VARIATIONS IN THE MIX PROPORTIONS AND THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL PRODUCED BY THE PLANTS. TWO MIXING PLANTS WERE TESTED UNDER NORMAL WORKING CONDITIONS. THE IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THE BARBER-GREENE PLANT IS THE USE OF VOLUME PROPORTIONING. WITH THIS METHOD, VARIATIONS IN THE MIX PROPORTIONS ARE NOT EASILY DETECTED AND SATISFACTORY WORKING RELIES ON THE UNIFORM FLOW OF AGGREGATE AND CEMENT THROUGH THE METERING DEVICES. THE TESTS SHOWED NEVERTHELESS THAT MIXING EFFICIENCY (OF THE ORDER OF 90 PER CENT) WAS SATISFACTORY AND AT LEAST AS GOOD AS ON CONTINUOUS MIXERS TESTED PREVIOUSLY, ON WHICH THE MATERIALS WERE GAUGED BY CONTINUOUS WEIGHING. THE COEFFICIENTS OF VARIATION OF MEASUREMENTS OF THE CEMENT OF THE MIXED MATERIAL TAKEN DURING A DAY'S OPERATION WERE 12 AND 16 PER CENT FOR THE TWO MIXING PLANTS RESPECTIVELY. THE CORRESPONDING COEFFICIENTS OF VARIATION OF THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL WERE 16 AND 26 PER CENT. THESE VALUES COMPARE WELL WITH THOSE OBTAINED WITH BATCH-TYPE MIXERS OF SIMILAR CAPACITY. THE HIGHER VARIATIONS WERE OBTAINED WITH THE MIXING PLANT WHICH WAS OPERATING WITH AN OUTPUT OF 150 TONS PER HOUR COMPARED WITH 75 TONS PER HOUR FOR THE OTHER MIXING PLANT. /RRL/
