THE DENSITY OF A SLAG LEAN CONCRETE BASE: PORT TALBOT BY- PASS A.48(M)

A NUMBER OF THE IN-SITU DENSITY TESTS CARRIED OUT ON THE LEAN CONCRETE USED AS PART OF THE BASE OF THE PORT TALBOT BY-PASS FAILED TO MEET THE 95 PER CENT OF FULL COMPACTION REQUIRED BY THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT'S SPECIFICATION FOR ROAD AND BRIDGE WORKS. A SLAG AGGREGATE WAS USED FOR THE LEAN CONCRETE AND, IN AN ATTEMPT TO IMPROVE THE DENSITY, A SHORT SECTION OF BASE WAS LAID USING A MODIFIED MIX SUGGESTED BY THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY. CORES DRILLED FROM THE MODIFIED MIX SHOWED A SMALL IMPROVEMENT IN COMPACTION OVER THE TYPICAL MIX USED IN THE CONTRACT. FURTHER RESEARCH INTO THE COMPACTION OF SLAG LEAN CONCRETE UNDER CONTROLLED PILOT-SCALE CONDITIONS IS INDICATED. /RRL/A/
