A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE THE RESISTANCE OF CEMENT - STABILIZED MATERIALS TO REPEATED LOADING

A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT INTO THE EFFECT OF REPEATED LOADING ON THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF CEMENT-STABILIZED MATERIALS. CYLINDRICAL SPECIMENS 1 IN (2.5 CM) IN DIAMETER BY 4 IN (10.2 CM) OR 5 IN (12.7 CM) LONG MADE FROM FIVE MATERIALS RANGING FROM A SILTY CLAY TO A CRUSHED ROCK WERE TESTED AS ROTATING CANTILEVERS, IN A MACHINE OF THE TYPE USED FOR THE FATIGUE-TESTING OF METALS. IN ADDITION, BEAMS 28 IN (71 CM) LONG BY 3 IN (7.6 CM) WIDE AND 3 IN (7.6 CM) DEEP, MADE FROM ONE MATERIAL (WELL-GRADED SAND), WERE TESTED AT RESONANCE IN AN APPARATUS APPLYING VIBRATORY STRESSES TO THE SPECIMENS. THE RELATION BETWEEN APPLIED STRESS, EXPRESSED AS A PERCENTAGE OF THE STATIC STRENGTH, AND THE NUMBER OF CYCLES OF LOADING TO FAILURE WAS STUDIED FOR THE RANGE 0 TO 3 X 106 CYCLES. THE EFFECT OF CEMENT CONTENT AND RATE OF APPLICATION OF LOADING WAS INVESTIGATED TO A LIMITED EXTENT. THE RESULTS FROM REGRESSION ANALYSES SUGGEST THAT A LOG-LOG RELATION EXISTS BETWEEN THE VARIABLES. IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE, HOWEVER, TO DETERMINE A STATIC STRENGTH ON EITHER TYPE OF SPECIMEN THAT WOULD REFLECT THE SAME STRESS CONDITIONS AS THE REPEATED LOADING TEST. THE EFFECT OF CEMENT CONTENT RATE OF APPLICATION OF LOADING, AND MATERIAL TYPE, APPEARED TO BE SMALL WHEN COMPARED WITH THE VARIABILITY OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THIS INVESTIGATION. THE AVERAGE REDUCTION IN FAILURE STRESS OBSERVED OVER THE RANGE STUDIED WAS ABOUT 40 PER CENT OF THE ESTIMATED STATIC STRENGTH FOR THE SPECIMENS TESTED AS ROTATING CANTILEVERS AND ABOUT 30 PER CENT OF THE ESTIMATED FLEXURAL STRENGTH FOR THE BEAMS TESTED UNDER VIBRATORY STRESSES. TO OBTAIN MORE ACCURATE INFORMATION ON THE EFFECT OF REPEATED LOADING ON THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF CEMENT-STABILIZED MATERIALS WILL NECESSITATE THE USE OF SPECIALLY DESIGNED EQUIPMENT. /RRL/A/
