HOW TO CONTROL MIXERS FOR SOLID MATTER AS TO MIXING ACCURACY

THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES A METHOD OF TESTING THE ACCURACY OF MIXERS. THREE SOURCES OF ERROR ARE CONSIDERED: (1) VARIATION IN THE QUANTITY OF ACTIVE MATERIAL IN A FIXED QUANTITY OF BASE-MATERIAL IN VARIOUS SAMPLES (THE STANDARD DEVIATION CAN BE FOUND BY THE POISSON-DISTRIBUTION), (2) THE INACCURACY OF THE ANALYSIS, AND (3) THE INACCURACY OF THE WEIGHING PROCESS. BY MEANS OF THE SO-CALLED LAW OF TRANSMISSION OF ERRORS, THE TOTAL THEORETICAL PROSPECTIVE VARIATION- COEFFICIENT CAN BE FIGURED FROM THESE SOURCES OF ERROR. NOW THE MIXING-ACCURACY CAN BE JUDGED BY COMPARING THE ACTUAL VARIATION-COEFFICIENT WITH THE THEORETICAL ONE, BY MEANS OF STATISTICAL METHODS, FOR INSTANCE THE F-TEST OR THE CHI- SQUARED TEST. /SWOV/RRL/
