REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

CERTAIN PHASES OF HIGHWAY ENGINEERING, INCLUDING THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS AND PAVEMENT BASES IS PRESENTED. STRESS-PRODUCING CONDITIONS ARE DESCRIBED. THEORETICAL ANALYSIS IS BRIEFLY REVIEWED AND SOME FUNDAMENTAL STRESS FORMULAS ARE GIVEN. AS AN AID IN OBTAINING NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS, SEVERAL TABULATIONS ARE INCLUDED SO THAT STRESS COMPUTATION IS REDUCED TO A SERIES OF SLIDE-RULE OPERATIONS. THUS, IN DEVELOPING THE THEORETICAL BACKGROUND OF THE SUBJECT, THE APPLICATION OF RATIONAL STRESS DETERMINATIONS TO THE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS IS EMPHASIZED AS A USEFUL ANALYTICAL TOOL FOR CONSISTENTLY APPRAISING THE COMPARATIVE MERITS OF SLAB THICKNESS, JOINT SPACING, REINFORCEMENT AND OTHER FEATURES AFFECTING STRUCTURAL STRENGTH.
