THE RESPONSE OF LINEAR VISCOELASTIC MATERIALS IN THE FREQUENCY DOMAIN

ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL PROBLEMS IN THE RATIONAL DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS IS CONCERNED WITH TIME-DEPENDENT CHANGES IN THE BEHAVIOR OF COMPONENT LAYERS. A FUNDAMENTAL DESCRIPTION OF THE STRESS-STRAIN-TIME RELATIONS IS PRESENTED AND A CONCEPT OF FREQUENCY DOMAIN IS INCORPORATED. THE GENERAL STRESS- STRAIN EQUATIONS OF LINEAR VISCOELASTIC MATERIALS ARE DEFINED IN THE FREQUENCY DOMAIN IN TERMS OF ALGEBRAIC COEFFICIENTS WHICH ARE FUNCTIONS OF FREQUENCY. THESE COEFFICIENTS ARE COMPLEX NUMBERS WHOSE MAGNITUDE AND PHASE, AT ANY GIVEN FREQUENCY, DEPEND ON THE PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL. DETAILED ANALYTICAL AND GRAPHICAL METHODS ARE PRESENTED FOR OBTAINING THE COMPLEX MODULI OF A GIVEN MATERIAL EXPERIMENTALLY. THESE ARE BASED ON A SERIES OF DYNAMIC TESTS COVERING A WIDE RANGE OF FREQUENCIES OR A SINGLE STATIC TEST EXTENDING OVER A WIDE RANGE OF TIME. THE FIRST METHOD YIELDS DISCRETE PAIRS OF VALUES OF MAGNITUDE AND THE PHASE OF THE COMPLEX MODULUS AT EACH FREQUENCY USED. THE SECOND METHOD YIELDS AN ANALYTICAL EXPRESSION FOR THE MODULUS AS A CONTINUOUS FUNCTION OF FREQUENCY. BY MEANS OF THE ELECTRICAL ANALOG IT IS POSSIBLE TO REPRESENT THE RESPONSE OF A VISCOELASTIC MATERIAL BY THAT OF A MECHANICAL MODEL WHOSE IMPEDANCE IS GIVEN BY THE COMPLEX MODULUS DEFINING THE RESPONSE UNDER CONSIDERATION.
