REPORT OF THE OBSERVER COMMITTEE OF THE CANADIAN GOOD ROADS ASSOCIATION ON THE AASHO ROAD TEST

THIS BOOK IS AN INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS OF THE AASHO ROAD TEST, CONDUCTED IN OTTAWA, ILLINOIS, USA BETWEEN 1954 AND 1962, FOR USE IN ROAD DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION IN CANADA. PART A OF THE BOOK CONTAINS A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT AND A SUMMARY OF THE PRINCIPAL RESULTS OF THE VARIOUS RIGID PAVEMENT, FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT AND BRIDGE EXPERIMENTS AS REPORTED BY THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD. IN PART B, THE COMMITTEE PRESENTS ITS INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS, TOGETHER WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE PRACTICAL FINDINGS AND HOW THEY CAN BE APPLIED TO THE DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF PAVEMENTS AND STRUCTURES IN CANADA. IN PART B RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN AXLE LOADING AND BOTH RIGID AND FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT THICKNESS REQUIREMENTS ARE PRESENTED. MINIMUM BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTION CRITERIA FOR HIGH VOLUME HEAVY DUTY FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS TO ENSURE SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE ARE SUGGESTED. THE INTERPRETATION WAS BASED UPON EXTENSIVE ANALYSIS OF ACTUAL DATA AND ON THE COMMITTEES PERIODIC OBSERVATIONS OF THE EXPERIMENTS DURING EACH YEAR OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING. /CGRA/
