GLOSSARY OF FORMWORK TERMS

FORMWORK IN CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN IMPORTANT FACTOR AND IN RECENT YEARS, WITH THE CONTINUING DEVELOPMENT OF BUILDING TECHNIQUES, IT HAS TAKEN ON AN EVEN GREATER IMPORTANCE. THE GLOSSARY OF FORMWORK TERMS IS BASED LARGELY ON TERMS AND DEFINITIONS SUBMITTED BY MEMBERS OF THE FORMWORK DEVELOPMENT GROUP THROUGHOUT THE BRITISH ISLES. FURTHER TERMS WERE ADDED FROM OTHER SOURCES AND THE RESULTING COLLECTION WAS EDITED BY A SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE FORMWORK DEVELOPMENT GROUP COMMITTEE, REPRESENTING NEARLY ALL SIDES OF THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY, WHO HAVE PAINSTAKINGLY CONSIDERED ALL THE ENTRIES. IT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST GLOSSARY ENTIRELY DEVOTED TO FORMWORK. IT IS HOPED THAT IT WILL BE REGARDED AS SOMETHING MORE THAN JUST A COLLECTION OF TERMS IN COMMON USE, TOGETHER WITH THEIR GENERALLY ACCEPTED DEFINITIONS. THERE IS A NEED FOR MORE UNIFORMITY IN THE LANGUAGE OF FORMWORK. THE IDEAL WOULD BE ONE TERM, ONE DEFINITION, AND VICE VERSA. IT WAS OBVIOUSLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE EDITORIAL SUB-COMMITTEE TO ACHIEVE THIS, BUT THEY HAVE TAKEN WHAT THEY HOPE WILL BE THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS THIS IDEAL BY INDICATING PREFERRED TERMS WHERE MORE THAN ONE TERM AT PRESENT EXISTS FOR ANY ONE DEFINITION. /AUTHOR/
