AN EXAMINATION OF THE STABILITY OF EXPANSION JOINT ASSEMBLIES UNDER LOADS APPLIED BY CONCRETE ROAD MAKING

THE PURPOSE OF THIS EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM WAS TO ESTABLISH A SATISFACTORY DESIGN AND METHOD OF INSTALLING CRADLE DOWEL BAR ASSEMBLIES FOR JOINTS IN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS, ENSURING ACCURACY OF BOTH POSITION AND ALIGNMENT OF THE DOWEL BARS AND JOINT FILLER IN THE COMPLETED PAVEMENT. AN EXPANSION JOINT ASSEMBLY, OF THE TYPE DESCRIBED IN THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT SPECIFICATION FOR ROAD AND BRIDGE WORKS /1963/, WAS THE BASIS OF THE TEST PROGRAM. TESTS WERE MADE TO EXAMINE THE STABILITY OF JOINT ASSEMBLIES SUBJECTED TO LOADS SIMILAR TO THOSE APPLIED BY CONCRETE ROAD-MAKING MACHINES. SEVENTY TESTS WERE PERFORMED WITH VARIATIONS IN THE MATERIALS, THE SPACING OF FIXINGS, THE TYPE OF FIXINGS AND THE CONFIGURATION OF THE COMPONENT PARTS OF THE ASSEMBLY. A COMPLEMENTARY STUDY OF THE PRESSURES EXERTED BY CONCRETING PLANT ON JOINT ASSEMBLIES WAS CARRIED OUT CONCURRENTLY BY THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY. IT WAS FOUND THAT SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE CAN BE OBTAINED FROM CRADLE ASSEMBLIES UNDER THE LOADS APPLIED FROM CONVENTIONAL PAVING PLANT, PROVIDED THAT BASE FIXINGS ARE SUFFICIENTLY FREQUENT. A MAXIMUM SPACING OF 2 FT. IS RECOMMENDED. CERTAIN OTHER MODIFICATIONS TO EXISTING COMMONLY USED ASSEMBLIES HAVE SHOWN TO BE NECESSARY. FOR EXAMPLE, THE STABILITY OF THE ASSEMBLY IS SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED IF OVER-SIZE HOLES ARE PROVIDED FOR DOWEL BARS IN THE JOINT FILLER. THE STIFFNESS OF THE JOINT FILLER ITSELF HAS A CONSIDERABLE INFLUENCE ON THE OVER-ALL STIFFNESS OF THE ASSEMBLY. HOWEVER, THE QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP IN FABRICATING THE ASSEMBLY IS ALSO OF GREAT IMPORTANCE. /RRL/A/
