ON THE SOLUTION OF EQUATIONS DESCRIBING SMALL SCALE DEFORMATION

The equations describing the spreading of a small hot spot, or the deformation of a macromolecule, due to flow are examined; first, the exact two dimensional solutions are discussed, to obtain qualitative insight. Then, a two variable asymptotic expansion technique is used to obtain solutions to the unsteady, three dimensional problem. The statistical behavior of spot size, or molecule size, in turbulent flow is determined. The solution obtained for polymer expansion agrees well with a criterion for onset of polymer drag reduction.
