SOUND BARRIER EFFECTIVENESS AGAINST HIGHWAY NOISE

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF POSSIBLE MODES FOR SOUND BEING BENT AROUND A WALL, SUCH AS DIFFRACTION, WIND SHEAR BENDING, AND THERMAL GRADIENT BENDING. THE MOST IMPORTANT BASIC MODE IS THAT OF SIMPLE DIFFRACTION. SOUND WAVES, DUE TO THEIR RELATIVELY LONG WAVELENGTHS, DO NOT NECESSARILY TRAVEL IN STRAIGHT LINES. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING WALLS OR BERMS TO REDUCE NOISE IS DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF VARYING THE HEIGHTS.
