EVALUATION STUDY - SAFETY ASPECTS OF ROADSIDE REST PROGRAM

THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA MAINTAINS A SAFETY ROADSIDE REST PROGRAM, THE COST OF EFFECTIVENESS OF WHICH IT WAS DESIRABLE TO KNOW. A 19-WEEK STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DEVELOP THE CRITERIA FOR A COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF THE PROGRAM AND THEN TO CONDUCT THE ANALYSIS. QUANTITATIVE DATA WERE GATHERED FROM A LITERATURE REVIEW, THE STATE'S COMPUTERIZED ACCIDENT RECORDS, AND TRIP QUESTIONNAIRES ADMINISTERED TO USERS OF FOUR ROADSIDE REST AREAS ALONG ROUTES NORMALLY USED FOR LONG-DISTANCE TRAVEL. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE PRESENTED.
