DEVELOPMENT OF GROUND COVERS FOR HIGHWAY SLOPES

OVER 500 DIFFERENT ACCESSIONS OF WOODY AND HERBACEOUS PLANT MATERIALS WERE STUDIED TO DETERMINE THEIR SUITABILITY FOR USE AS GROUND COVERS ON HIGHWAY SLOPES IN MINNESOTA. PLANT MATERIALS ARE SEPARATED ACCORDING TO PERFORMANCE: 34 ARE RECOMMENDED FOR USE AND 71 ARE RECOMMENDED FOR LIMITED USE IN MINNESOTA. PLANTS NOT RECOMMENDED ARE ALSO REVIEWED. PLANT DESCRIPTIONS, GEOGRAPHIC RANGE, HARDINESS, SITE LIMITATIONS, SALT TOLERANCE, PROPAGATION, AVAILABILITY, ESTABLISHMENT, CULTURE, AND MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS OF THE RECOMMENDED MATERIALS ARE DISCUSSED. SEVERAL CULTURAL INVESTIGATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE 6-YEAR PROGRAM ARE ALSO REPORTED. /AUTHOR/
