DEVELOPMENT OF PROCEDURES FOR PROCESS INSPECTION OF HEAVY MEDIA BENEFICIATION PLANTS FOR COARSE AGGREGATE

THE OBJECT OF THE STUDY WAS TO DEVELOP AND DEMONSTRATE HEAVY MEDIA SEPARATION PLANT CONTROLS THAT WILL ASSURE AN AGGREGATE OF SUCH HIGH QUALITY THAT SAMPLING INSPECTION CAN BE SUPPLEMENTED BY OCCASIONAL PROCESS INSPECTION. IT WAS FOUND THAT CONTROL PRACTICE VARIED TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT COMPARISONS WERE MEANINGLESS. THUS A PILOT PLANT WAS CONSTRUCTED IN THE LABORATORY FOR THE PURPOSE OF: (1) INVESTIGATING THE MEASUREMENT OF SPECIFIC GRAVITY, CONSISTENCY AND STABILITY OF MEDIUM, (2) DETERMINING SPECIFIC GRAVITY DISTRIBUTIONS BY HEAVY LIQUID SEPARATIONS TO EVALUATE PERFORMANCE OF PLANT, (3) MEASURING THE AND SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS OF GRAVEL, (4) MEASURING THE EFFECTS OF MEDIUM CONTAMINANTS, AND (5) DETERMINING EFFECT OF SIZE STRUCTURES OF MEDIA ON CONSISTENCY AND STABILITY OF CIRCULATING MEDIUMS. IT CAN BE CONCLUDED THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT VARIABLE EFFECTING THE SEPARATION IS THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF THE MEDIUM. THE FLOW OF THE MEDIUM IN A CONE VESSEL HAS A DIFFERENT EFFECT ON THE STRATIFICATION THAN THE FLOW THROUGH A DRUM. IDEAL SEPARATIONS ACCORDING TO THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY ARE NOT REALIZED IN THE HEAVY MEDIUM SEPARATION PROCESS UNLESS THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FEED, OF THE MEDIUM AND OF THE SEPARATORY SYSTEM, ALL ARE MAINTAINED IN CONSTANT UNIFORM CONTROL. THE PILOT PLANT DEMONSTRATED THAT AUTOMATIC MONITORING AND RECORDING OF THESE ITEMS CAN PROVIDE ALL THE CONDITIONS FOR PROCESS INSPECTION THAT ASSURE A DESIGNATED QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT. /AUTHOR/
