COAL MINE SPOILS RECLAMATION RESEARCH PROJECT

AN EFFORT IS MADE TO REDUCE THE UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS OF COAL STRIP-MINING AND RESTORE OR CREATE IH THE SHORTEST TIME FEASIBLE A DESIRABLE AND PROTECTIVE ENVIRONMENT. A MAJOR EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON THE OBSERVATION AND EVALUATION OF STUDIES INITIATED IN PREVIOUS YEARS. PRELIMINARY SEDIMENTARY AND WATER INVESTIGATIONS WERE CONDUCTED. MORE INTENSIVE STUDIES WERE INITIATED TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF SLOPE AND EXPOSURE, FERTILIZATION, AND SURFACE SOILS MEDIA PREPARATION ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A DESIRABLE VEGETATIVE COVER ON COAL MINE SPOILS. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN AND FUTURE STUDIES ARE SUGGESTED.
