EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON PLANT COVER FOR HIGHWAY SLOPES

RESEARCH ON PLANT COVER FOR SLOPES OF CUTS WAS MADE, USING SEVERAL VEGETAL SPECIES NORMALLY EMPLOYED IN THIS TYPE OF OPERATION INCLUDING IN MOST CASES, GRAMINEOUS PLANTS AND LEGUMINOSAE. THE PLANNING STAGE INCLUDES SUCH OBJECTIVES AS THE BEHAVIOR AND ADAPTATABILITY OF THE SPECIES EMPLOYED, THEIR CAPACITY OF STABILIZATION AND OF PROTECTION AGAINST EROSION. THE CONDITIONS OF THE ERA (LIMING OF THE SOIL, FERTILIZATION, IRRIGATION, PHYTOSANITATION, ETC) ARE OBSERVED. THE SECOND STAGE, THE EXECUTION, CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS: (1) SURVEY OF THE CONDITIONS OF THE AREA SELECTED WITH A SUMMARY OF THE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND THE PHYSICAL TESTS OF SAMPLES COMING FROM THIS AREA, THE SUMMARY OF THE LOCAL GEOLOGY, AS WELL AS CLIMATE AND TOPOGRAPHY. ENCLOSED IS A MAP OF THE EXPERIMENTAL AREA IN THE SCALE 1:200. (2) THE OPERATIONAL PART, CONCERNED WITH THE IMPLANTATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RESEARCH, SUCH AS THE SETTLEMENT AND LEVELING OF THE SLOPES' SURFACES, THE CONSTRUCTION OF LANDINGS AND GUTTERS, THE PHASES OF PREPARATION OF THE GROUND AND THE IMPLANATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE EXPERIMENTAL PLANT COVERS. THE FOLLOWING PLANT COVERS WERE TESTED: PERENNIAL SOYBEAN, CENTROSEMA, SIRATRO, UNDERBRUSH PEANUT, BERMUDA GRASS, AUSTRALIAN GRASS, PENSACOLA-BAY GRASS, MISSIONARY GRASS, MARGARIDAO, PERNAMBUCAN GRASS AND A MIXTURE OF LEGIMINOSAE. (3) GENERALIZATION OF THE CONCEPTS GIVEN IN THE WORK, CONSIDERING THAT SPECIAL CONDITIONS PARTICULAR TO EACH REGION. INFLUENCE THE DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE DIVERSE COVERING TESTS. ATTENTION IS CALLED TO THE OPERATIONAL DIFFICULTIES DUE TO THE LACK OF SEEDS IN BRAZIL. PERNAMBUCAN GRASS (PASPALUM MARITIUM), IS RECOMMENDED AS THE SPECIES WITH THE BEST PERFORMANCE AND AN OUTSTANDING CAPACITY FOR SLOPE STABILIZATION. SIRATRO, PERENNIAL SOYBEAN, AND JITIRANA ARE RECOMMENDED AS THE SPECIES WHICH BEST ADAPT TO THE SLOPE CONDITIONS IN THE LEGIMINOSAE BRANCH. THE USE OF THE HYDRAULIC SPRINKLING PROCESS IS RECOMMENDED FOR SLOPECOVERS AND MARGINAL AREAS WHERE THE LEGUMINOSAE CAN BE APPLIED TOGETHER WITH THE PENSACOLA-BAY GRASS. /RRI/
