A KEY TO PLANT FAMILIES USING LEAVES, STEMS AND ROOTS

THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF A STUDY TO DEVELOP A PRACTICAL KEY TO PLANT FAMILIES BASED ON VEGETATIVE CHARACTERISTICS. THE KEY PERMITS IDENTIFICATION OF MOST PLANTS WITHIN THE CENTRAL UNITED STATES AT ANY STAGE OF GROWTH, AND IS ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN THE SPRING BEFORE THE PLANTS HAVE FLOWERED OR SET SEED. SUCH IDENTIFICATION IS NECESSARY FOR MANY PURPOSES INCLUDING DETERMINATION OF BEST MEANS OF WEED CONTROL BY CHEMICALS. THE KEY IS RESTRICTED TO HERBACEOUS TERRESTRIAL PLANTS (LAND PLANTS EXCLUDING TREES). AQUATIC PLANTS, ARE MOST EASILY HANDLED AS A GROUP AND A SEPARATE KEY TO THE AQUATIC PLANTS IS IN THE EARLY STAGES OF PREPARATION. A GLOSSARY IS PROVIDED.
