SCENIC ROAD: A BASIS FOR ITS PLANNING, DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT

THE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES ARE PRESENTED OF SCENIC QUALITIES OF ROADS AND HOW THE ROAD, ITS ROADSIDE FACILITIES, AND LANDSCAPE CAN HELP THE VISITOR APPRECIATE HIS TRIP. THE BASIC PURPOSES OF FOREST SCENIC ROADS, THEIR RELATION TO THE FOREST DEVELOPMENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM, AND THE LOGICAL STEPS IN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND ECONOMIC ANALYSIS ARE DISCUSSED. ENHANCEMENT OF THE ROAD CORRIDOR THROUGH THE TREATMENT OF THE ROADSIDE VEGETATION, CANOPY, SOIL, AND ROCK CUTS OR BANKS IS ILLUSTRATED. THE RELATIONSHIP OF ESTHETICS TO SAFETY IS CONSIDERED. THE MORE ESTHETIC TYPES OF ROADSIDE FACILITIES SUCH AS SIGNS, BRIDGES, AND CULVERTS ARE SHOWN. CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDES ARE DEVELOPED. GUIDES FOR ECONOMIC JUSTIFICATION, TRANSPORTATION PLANNING, AND SELECTION OF SCENIC EASEMENTS AND RIGHTS-OF-WAY ARE INCLUDED. /AUTHOR/
