CROWNVETCH STABILIZES PIEDMONT HIGHWAY BANKS

CROWNVETCH WAS FOUND TO BE A PROMISING PLANT FOR ROADBANK STABILIZATION IN THE PIEDMONT UPLANDS OF GEORGIA. CROWNVETCH CAN BE ESTABLISHED EASIER BY DIRECT SEEDING THAN BY TRANSPLANTING. A GOOD MULCH OR NURSE CROP IS ESSENTIAL UNDER ALL SOIL AND SLOPE CONDITIONS WHEN A DIRECT SEEDING IS MADE. CROP-STRAW MULCHES ARE BEST. FALL SEEDINGS MADE IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER AND SPRING SEEDING IN MARCH AND APRIL ARE BEST FOR THE PIEDMONT AREA. COMBINATION SEEDINGS OF CROWNVETCH AND ABRUZZI RYE WORK WELL. LIMITED COMBINATIONS OF FALL AND SPRING CROWNVETCH PLANTINGS WITH FESCUE AND COMMON BERMUDAGRASS, PLUS STRAW MULCH LOOK PROMISING. ON THESE PLANTINGS, LOW RATES OF NITROGEN WERE APPLIED TO AVOID A SMOTHERING GROWTH FROM THE GRASSES.
