SELECTION OF WOODY PLANTS TO BE USED FOR HIGHWAY LANDSCAPING AND EROSION CONTROL

A SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED OF NATIVE PLANTS AND THE SOILS IN WHICH THEY OCCUR DURING JUNE, JULY AND AUGUST OF 1966 IN ARKANSAS. REPRESENTATIVE SITES WERE SELECTED WITHIN VARIOUS SOIL ASSOCIATION REGIONS FOR THE SURVEY. TOP OF SURFACE SOIL SAMPLES AS WELL AS SUBSOIL SAMPLES WERE TESTED FOR FERTILITY. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS ORNAMENTAL SPECIES WAS TESTED IN STABILIZING THE SURFACES OF CUTS OR FILLS. DATA ON PH, LIME REQUIREMENTS, AND EXTRACTABLE POTASSIUM, CALCIUM, SODIUM, AND PHOSPHORUS WERE COMPILED FROM SOIL TESTS.
