BRIDGE DECK DETERIORATION STUDY. PART 1: A COMPARISON OF 777 UNCOVERED DECKS

THIS FIELD SURVEY OF THE CONDITIONS OF 777 UNCOVERED BRIDGE DECKS IN KANSAS REVEALED THAT SPALLING AND SCALING WERE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TYPES OF DETERIORATION THAT NEEDED TO BE EVALUATED. NO CORES WERE TAKEN, AND NO LABORATORY WORK WAS PERFORMED IN CONNECTION WITH THIS PARTICULAR PHASE OF THE STUDY. DESIGN AND MATERIALS DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM THE PLANS AND PROJECT CONSTRUCTION FILES AND ENTERED ON DATA PROCESSING CARDS. A COMPOSITE CARD COMBINED ENOUGH INFORMATION FOR IDENTIFICATION, AMOUNT OF DETERIORATION, AND 25 FACTORS CONSIDERED MOST DESIRABLE FOR STUDY, SUCH AS BRIDGE TYPE AND DIMENSIONS, TYPES AND SOURCES OF MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, AND CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES. A RATING SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED WITH ADJUSTMENTS FOR AGE AND TRAFFIC. A COMPUTER WAS USED TO CALCULATE A RATING FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL BRIDGE AND TO OBTAIN VALUES FOR EACH ITEM OF 25 FACTORS. THESE VALUES INCLUDED AVERAGE RATING, STANDARD DEVIATION OF THE RATING, AVERAGE PLUS AND MINUS ONE STANDARD DEVIATION, AND UPPER AND LOWER LIMITS OF RATINGS. NO ONE SINGLE FACTOR WAS FOUND TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DETERIORATION. SOME COMBINATIONS OF FACTORS APPEAR TO GIVE AN INDICATION OF TRENDS, BUT SAMPLE SIZES ARE USUALLY SMALL AND NOT CONCLUSIVE. /AUTHOR/
