THE FORMATION OF THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CEMENT HAS BEEN STUDIED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION, TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPE AND, RECENTLY, SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE TECHNIQUES, AND FROM TIME TO TIME RESULTS OF THIS EXTENSIVE PROGRAM HAVE BEEN REPORTED. THIS PAPER COLLECTS AND COLLATES ALL THIS INFORMATION. THE FORMATION OF THE PHYSICAL STRUCTURE OF CEMENT PASTES IS FOLLOWED FROM JUST AFTER MIXING UP TO SIX MONTHS. THE FORMATION OF THE CHEMICAL PHASE IS FOLLOWED IN PARALLEL. ATTEMPTS ARE MADE TO CORRELATE THE ABOVE INFORMATION WITH THE TENSILE AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS, DRYING SHRINKAGE, ETC., OF HARDENED PASTE. /AUTHOR/
