QUALITY CONTROL IN CONCRETE

THE ORGANIZATION OF QUALITY CONTROL METHODS FOR CONCRETE IN CALIFORNIA IS DISCUSSED. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS IS GIVEN TO (1) SHORTCOMINGS OF PREVIOUS LOT TESTING METHODS AND (2) THE APPLICATION OF STATISTICS TO QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY CONTROL. A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM OF QUALITY ENTAILS ESTABLISHMENT OF APPROPRIATE SAMPLING METHODS AND SCHEDULES FOR ALL THE MATERIALS, IDENTIFYING THE DIFFERENT MEANINGS OF "QUALITY" ASSIGNED BY DIFFERENT GROUPS IN THE CHAIN OF PRODUCTION AND USE AND ASSURING THAT CONTROL MEASURES ARE PERTINENT TO THEIR NEEDS, AND PROVIDING THE NECESSARY TECHNICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATION TO ENSURE ADEQUATE CONTROL. A MAJOR PROBLEM IS THAT THE ENGINEERS AND TECHNOLOGISTS REQUIRED FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE WORK IN THIS FIELD ARE RARELY AVAILABLE. EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC SAMPLING PROCEDURES FOR VARIOUS MATERIALS AND PRODUCTION STEPS ARE GIVEN, TOGETHER WITH A SURVEY OF THE STATISTICAL METHODS USED. THE ENHANCEMENT OF QUALITY CONTROL BY AUTOMATED PRODUCTION PROCEDURES IS DISCUSSED BRIEFLY.
