SOME ASPECTS OF STRUCTURAL FIRE ENDURANCE OF CONCRETE

CONVINCED THAT THE FIRE RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE FOLLOWS LAWS THAT CAN BE EXPRESSED IN TERMS OF ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES, THE PORTLAND CEMENT ASSOCIATION HAS DEVELOPED DESIGN METHODS THAT CAN BE USED TO PREDICT THE FIRE ENDURANCE OF SOME COMMON STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS. THE ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES AND RESEARCH DATA ALREADY HAVE DEMONSTRATED THEIR VALUE AS IMPORTANT TOOLS IN ANALYZING EXPERIENCE IN ACTUAL FIRES. THEY SHOULD BE USEFULE IN ESTABLISHING STANDARD TEST CRITERIA AND IN INTERPRETING TEST RESULTS. ACCEPTANCE TESTING ACCORDING TO THE STANDARD FIRE TEST WILL REMAIN A VALUABLE TOOL; THIS IS ESPECIALLY SIGNIFICANT WHEN DATA ARE NECESSARY FOR COMPLEX OR UNUSUAL ASSEMBLIES. IN A VERY FEW YEARS, AN ENGINEER WITH A SLIDE RULE AND A FEW DESIGN AIDS WILL BE ABLE TO PROPORTION ALMOST ALL REINFORCED OR PRESTRESED CONCRETE STRUCTURES FOR ANY DESIRED FIRE LOADING WITH THE SAME ACCURACY HE CAN NOW ACHIEVE WHEN DESIGNING FOR GRAVITY LOADING. /AUTHOR/
